STYX Show Review – Tampa, FL

May 9th, 2013 by Megan Washington

By Bryan Edward

Styx took the stage at approximately 6:45PM on May 4th to a half-capacity crowd that seemed rather tired after a long day of walking the State Fairgrounds, riding rides and filling up on fair food. James Young walked out with his arms raised, as if to will the crowd out of their daze, the cheers became a roar and Styx kicked off their Funshine performance with Blue Collar Man. The crowd that was moderately enthused for Uncle Ted turned the Amphitheater into an arena once more, dancing to the ripping solos of “Grand Illusion” and singing along to “Lady” and other classics through the entire set. Emerging from backstage to perform on “Fooling Yourself” and again to finish the set on “Come Sail Away” was original bassist Chuck Panozzo while current bassist Ricky Phillips played a gorgeous Gibson SG doubleneck guitar alongside him. They followed up with an encore of “Rockin’ The Paradise” and a nice long jam on “Renegade.” Reminding everyone of the moments they’ve had while reaching to turn up a Styx song over the years, we all created a new one together as the sun set behind the Tampa skyline at the Funshine Music Festival.
