Usually the term “music for when your life just isn’t working out” means “eloquently depressive, goes brilliantly with crying and copious amounts of consumable vice”, but that’s certainly not the case with Manhattan Murder Mystery. Because who the hell needs good jobs and productive relationships when you have a show as fun as the one they put on this past weekend with So Many Wizards (also a choice band for your Born Ruffians meets Skaters meets 90s revivalism fix). All the band’s songs take on an extremely anthem-ic quality live (think about how all those bands you loved in high school and sang along to in your friend’s smelly cars on the way to fast food joints because they had those cool sounding indie-folk-punk influences, how those bands should have turned out), and stage presence kinda can’t be beat when the high energy performance seeps directly into the pit and turns into one giant group hug to a chorus of “I was in the back of a cop caaaarrrrr…” (nothing is more hardcore than a group hug, you guys). All in all, a spectacular little LA band that has a sound that equal parts fresh and surprising with a comfort food feel.
