Black Veil Brides – Fall 2014 Black Mass Tour Review

December 7th, 2014 by Megan Washington

Black Veil Brides

In the past decade, the only line for a show that I have seen come close to the line to get in the House of Blues for the Black Mass Tour was circa 2007 for Boys Like Girls and Hellogoodbye (not even a sold out Fall Out Boy show). Passionate Black Veil Brides fans waited in a line with their war paint in a snaking configuration that was wrapped around the Downtown Disney property almost to the entrance to the West Side.

Friendly note: Arrive early. The end of the Orlando line was not let in to the show until Set It Off was on stage performing–a large number of people missed Drama Club.

At the conclusion of the Falling In Reverse set, a noticeable amount of people left the venue.

Now, before you dismiss a band based on whether you agree or not with how they dress, you should check out how they rock. After all, this is about the music. Black Veil Brides put on a fantastic display of rock ‘n’ roll that merge traditional elements reminiscent of Poison and Motley Crue with more recent movements in the music scene. The spectacle included dancing lights, guitar strings being licked, and of course shirtless and sweaty musicians grinding the notes out of the ax slung around their body. Yes, there was some makeup too, but that is secondary and even irrelevant in this case. The BVB Army wore their warpaint proudly–some with faux stitches painted onto their faces while other fans had more intricate artwork–a paled complexion with various black lines adorning their skin.

As soon as the lights dimmed and the curtains opened, fans began to roar. The band kicked off their seventeen song set list with, “Heart of Fire” off of the self-titled October 2014 release. Throughout the performance, the various members of the band kept smiling and looking out into the sea of waving arms and shrieks. It was unmistakeable that Black Veil Brides were enjoying the enthusiasm that the Orlando fans were delivering.

After “Rebel Love Song,” frontman Andy Biersack got a chant of, “CC,” going (note: CC is the nickname of the band’s drummer, Christian Coma). Coma thrilled the devotees with impressive double bass-pounding rhythms that seemed to incite even more spirit from the crowd.

For Biersack, both singing and screaming appeared to come ridiculously easy; the notes seemed to ring out effortlessly. The vocalist shared with the crowd that he had some special guests that were in attendance–some of his extended family. He introduced the various family and friends and even brought one of the little girls on stage to a round of cheers.

The performance included tracks from each of the BVB releases so fans were treated to quite a mix.
